January foodie penpal day

foodie treats

The arrival of the Foodie Penpal parcel always creates great excitement here and this month’s parcel from John was no exception.  As you can see, my girls couldn’t wait until I’d taken the pictures before tasting the Scotch Bonnet sauce.  They loved it but it was far too hot for me.  We then used it to pep up a Beef Chilli which was a great success – lots of flavour but not so hot.

The Sumac and Nigella seeds are earmarked for some curries in the next few weeks. The seaweed made a lovely change in my lunch box and sparked a lot of interest in the staff room.

I’m still wondering how best to use the  black pudding and chorizo and you can never have to much vanilla.

A great parcel – thanks John.

If you want to participate in Foodie Penpals you’ll find all the details at Rock Salt and if you want to see what was in other people’s parcels go to the Lean Green Bean.

November foodie penpals

Today is the November Reveal Day and this morning I didn’t think I’d be able to join in because I hadn’t received my parcel. I had that sinking feeling of another disappointment but I’m delighted to say that it did arrive this afternoon 🙂

November foodie penpalsPoor Phil had been ill so he posted this delicious parcel a little late.   Hope you are feeling better now Phil. I was delighted to receive so many lovely treats, some old favourites and some new to me.  I love tiny pasta and use it not only for soup but also for pasta salad for my lunch box.  Very handy. You just can’t go wrong with Home-made Strawberry Jam – I feel the urge to bake some scones coming on!   I was recently introduced to these toffee filled waffles.  This one is delicious. I am nibbling it as I write 🙂 I haven’t tried the drinks – Mao Feng  green tea and Belgian  hot chocolate but I look forward to trying them both this weekend.

Lots of lovely treats.  Thank you Phil.

October Foodie Penpals

October foodie penpals

It’s been a while since I’ve written about a Foodie Penpal parcel because I’ve been  unlucky with my last few; one contained very little and two simply didn’t turn up at all. So disappointing and such a shame that there is always someone willing to take advantage of the rest of us.  I’ve been taking part in Foodie Penpals for over a year now and have had hours of fun looking for just the right thing for my penpal’s parcel and I’ve received  a  wide variety delicious treats and unusual ingredients in return. To find out how it all works visit Rock Salt.

I’m glad to say that everything is back on track this month with this parcel  from Miriam. Thank you Miriam for such useful goodies and the beautifully illustrated card which you can see in the background of  in the picture above.  The icing sugar and cloves are destined for Christmas baking and the crackers and Nakd bars will liven up my lunch box.

May Foodie Penpals

I was delighted to receive this parcel of foodie delights from Melanie in Germany. They were all new to me so I’ve had great fun tasting.

The Mango  Marshmallows were a big surprise. I don’t think I’ve ever tried flavoured marshmallows before. They really do taste of mango.

I used the Red Pepper Spread and the Cheese and Sesame Crackers to take to work for lunch. They were delicious, especially the Red Pepper Spread.

The Moroccan Mint tea has provided refreshing breaks in report writing this week.

The only thing I have left to try are the assorted Italian herb mixes; Toscana, Sicilia, Costiera and Bruschetta. They will come in very handy this weekend when I will be batch cooking meals for the term ahead.

Thank you Melanie for a great food parcel.

This month my delicious parcel came from Jules in Lancashire.  I was thrilled to see so many goodies coming out of one box. A great mix of treats and ingredients.  Everything is gluten free which is great.  The Dolly Mixtures and Kendal Mint Cake will bring back lots of childhood memories for my Knight (ISA) as he enjoys a sugar fix. I’ve been enjoying the Lemon Cheese for breakfast since the parcel arrived. Delicious!  I used the smoked garlic straight away for a slow cooked leg of lamb with garlic. It was very tasty even the children  cleaned their plates.   Many thanks, Jules, for a great parcel.

This month my parcel came from Caitlin,  down in Cornwall. As you can see, she sent a delicious selection of gluten free products.  This is what was left of it once my DD, with severe gluten intolerance, had ransacked it!  The tea and lemon biscuits have been giving  me a boost when I get in from work. The banana chips are soft and chewy and are great in lunch boxes along with the Frutina bars and the Oaty Bakes. I’ve been saving the  the noodles and chocolate this weekend.  A great box.  Thank you Caitlin.
