January foodie penpal day

foodie treats

The arrival of the Foodie Penpal parcel always creates great excitement here and this month’s parcel from John was no exception.  As you can see, my girls couldn’t wait until I’d taken the pictures before tasting the Scotch Bonnet sauce.  They loved it but it was far too hot for me.  We then used it to pep up a Beef Chilli which was a great success – lots of flavour but not so hot.

The Sumac and Nigella seeds are earmarked for some curries in the next few weeks. The seaweed made a lovely change in my lunch box and sparked a lot of interest in the staff room.

I’m still wondering how best to use the  black pudding and chorizo and you can never have to much vanilla.

A great parcel – thanks John.

If you want to participate in Foodie Penpals you’ll find all the details at Rock Salt and if you want to see what was in other people’s parcels go to the Lean Green Bean.

Christmas is finally here after weeks and weeks of build up. We travelled home today after a weekend with my Knight-in-Shining-Armour’s family. No it’s not a Christmas tradition but a celebration of a family member surviving a major illness this year.  They will be partying on all week whilst we are returning to have Christmas at home with my side of the family. I’m looking forward to being able to relax.

Monday 23rd Eating somewhere on the journey home
Tuesday 24th Poached salmon, now potatoes & veg
Wednesday 25th Traditional Christmas Turkey & trimmings
Thursday 26th Indian Feast – this has become a family tradition with my children who are not keen on too much traditional Christmas fayre.
Friday 27th Left overs
Saturday 28th Left overs
Sunday 29th French onion soup

Meal Planning Monday 16.12.13

Christmas will be taking over everything at work this week. We’ve written our letters to Santa,  retold the story of the First Christmas and solved a variety of Christmassy mathematical problems. So this week it will be Christmas lunch, Nativity play, parties, Christmas disco, visit from Santa and the Carol Service. I love it but it is exhausting.  We also have a colleague who is retiring so there will also be a variety of farewell celebrations interspersed throughout the week.

So this is a pared down meal plan, mainly using up what is in the fridge and  freezer.

Monday 16th Cheese and ham omelette
Tuesday 17th Prawn & lemon risotto
Wednesday 18th Tuna & Baked potato
Thursday 19th Retirement do
Friday 20th Slow cooker beef casserole
Saturday 21st Away for family celebration
Sunday 22nd Away for family celebration

November foodie penpals

Today is the November Reveal Day and this morning I didn’t think I’d be able to join in because I hadn’t received my parcel. I had that sinking feeling of another disappointment but I’m delighted to say that it did arrive this afternoon 🙂

November foodie penpalsPoor Phil had been ill so he posted this delicious parcel a little late.   Hope you are feeling better now Phil. I was delighted to receive so many lovely treats, some old favourites and some new to me.  I love tiny pasta and use it not only for soup but also for pasta salad for my lunch box.  Very handy. You just can’t go wrong with Home-made Strawberry Jam – I feel the urge to bake some scones coming on!   I was recently introduced to these toffee filled waffles.  This one is delicious. I am nibbling it as I write 🙂 I haven’t tried the drinks – Mao Feng  green tea and Belgian  hot chocolate but I look forward to trying them both this weekend.

Lots of lovely treats.  Thank you Phil.
